“The
big question is, who will access the resources"?

Women
4 Resources (W4R) is a not for profit
Welsh based women’s organisation
founded in 2006, gaining charity
status in September 2008.
Our main objective is the relief
of financial hardship of women in
Wales and in Sub-Saharan Africa
through initiatives designed, run
and managed by women. We aim to
provide support, practical assistance
and funding in order to have a long-term
impact on poverty.

The
partnership between W4R and Concerned
Women for Progress 4 Liberia (CWP4L),
developed after a meeting in 2006
between the Head teacher of Alpha
Academy, Paynesville and a women’s
group supported by MEWN, Swansea
(Minority Ethnic Women’s Network).
Women in both countries play an
active although often undervalued
role in society. |

Election
campaign slogan 2006 |
.
There is renewed hope in Liberia
since Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (above)
was elected president in 2006 –
the first elected woman leader in
Africa. She faces tough decisions
and hard work to rebuild the country
after 14 years of civil war.
It will make "a big
difference for African women. I
might even say for women all over
the world. I think African women
today are sitting on the edge of
their chairs waiting for this to
happen because it is going to open
the doors," she told journalists
during her campaign.
Women may gain under her
leadership, but it will be because
she believes their market stalls
are vital to the country's economic
stability; she will work for peace
not because she is a woman but because
that is the only route to growth
and a new deal for Liberians.

Liberia is a country rich in rubber
iron ore, timber, diamonds and gold
but 14 years of civil war have destroyed
the country’s infrastructure.
Today 60% of people in Liberia live
below the poverty line of $130 a
year. Women experience some of the
highest rates of sexual violence
and domestic abuse in the world.
Mrs Johnson Sirleaf is putting women
at the centre of her political agenda.
This is an exciting and hopeful
time for women in Liberia and Women4Resources
is thrilled to be able to work with
women in Paynesville, Monrovia
